Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
Since January, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
