Individuals who endured sexual abuse by church officials have voiced fresh optimism following their initial encounter with the new Pope at the Vatican.

Gemma Hickey, who leads Ending Clergy Abuse, stated that the pontiff's choice to engage with them so early in his papacy sent a strong message about his dedication to addressing the issue.

Global Strict Approach Pushed

The organization is pushing for a global zero-tolerance policy that would defrock any clergy member who confesses to or is proven of abusing a child. This policy has already been adopted in the US.

The Pontiff recognized that there is "opposition in some parts of the world" to this proposal, according to Hickey.

"Everyone was practical when we acknowledged that there is pushback," they stated.

Inherited Challenge

The new Pope, who assumed the role in spring, has inherited this persistent problem that has plagued the Catholic Church for many years.

Previous efforts to address the situation included an historic summit on paedophilia within the Church and changes to church laws to clearly outlaw sexual abuse.

Personal Connection

For the representative, who uses gender-neutral pronouns, the campaign for global implementation of the measure is deeply meaningful. The Canadian advocate revealed they were victimized by a clergy member who was subsequently moved between different parishes.

"Hopefully this will establish the direction for his leadership, because we want to work with him," they stated. "We have the common objective, we seek to eliminate clergy abuse."

Historic Encounter

Multiple members of the organization, which represents survivors and supporters from over thirty nations, engaged with the Pope in his official residence.

The discussion, originally scheduled for a brief period, extended to a full hour, during which the Pope "mostly listened to us," according to the representative.

The Pope was described as "very understanding" when listening to the account of a woman abused at a church-run institution for native youth in Canada.

Hickey noted the Pope was "compassionate" about their personal story and appeared "modest, funny, and approachable."

"Survivors have long wanted a voice in discussions and I didn't perceive like he was making empty promises," Hickey commented. "I felt like he was genuine, realistic, and very open and eager to collaborate with us."

Canon Law Changes

The group is hoping that changes to canon law will enable the implementation of the zero-tolerance policy worldwide.

They have consulted specialists and compiled documents that they plan to present to the pontiff.

"He appeared interested in looking at it," Hickey noted.

Responsibility Emphasized

A recently released church-ordered report emphasized the "necessity of a streamlined protocol for the stepping down and/or removal of religious officials or staff in cases of misconduct or failure to act."

The report also noted that survivors consistently emphasized the "critical requirement for church leaders and senior officials to be made responsible for negligence and concealment."

Moving Forward

Hickey revealed they told the pontiff at the start of their discussion: "This is as much a risk for him to participate in a dialogue as it was for us."

Following the encounter, Hickey voiced optimism for future change.

"We understand it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the end of the day, uniting and establishing a connection and persisting to build that relationship is a step in the right direction," they stated.

They added that they shared with the pontiff: "Even though it's a dark chapter, I feel like we can alter how the story concludes - he valued that."
